Only five red states left

Very interesting results from Gallup about public opinion across the country. If all potential voters were registered to vote, and if all actually voted along party lines, there would only be 5 states in the country where Republicans hold a clear plurality. Democrats hold a plurality in 35 states. The map looks great for Democrats, but holds a number of lessons as well.

East Multnomah County Democratic Victories

Today's Oregonian "inPortland" insert has an article analyzing the Democratic victories in East Multnomah County.  A couple of quotes are worthy of mention.  Tim Nashif (a Republican consultant) is right when he said "It's been happening slowly but surely for a long time."

Oregon has long been an evenly divided state.

People often have asked me why Oregon voters will seemingly adopt contradictory positions, and why some elections in Oregon are so close. The fact is that for quite some time Oregon has been very evenly divided between conservative and liberal philosophies. Oregon has a large number of voters who are either strongly conservative or strongly liberal, and a smaller number who fall in the middle.
